The First Day: January 1/2000, I remember it well. It was an honest to god New Year’s resolution. I didn’t know what to do. It wasn’t like I got a new Bowflex or a Nautilus system for Christmas. Cold start, first day. What did I have to work with? Well!, I had a stationary bike that I acquired from a thrift shop for $5.00 about 6 years earlier and a couple of 10lb/4.54kg plastic plates that I got at a garage sale years earlier. That’s what I had so that’s what I used. The only coach I ever had told me to go on the stationary bike for 5mins to warm up. So I did. It was hard. I couldn’t use full tension for 5mins that first day. Then I took my plates and used them like dumbbells and jumped around for another 15mins. My first twenty minute workout. Then I felt kinda sick to my stomach and I sat on the couch for 3 hours and I wondered where is this energy that everyone talks about. However, I was 39 years old and I was having trouble getting out of a chair and I didn’t like it. I thought there must be something to this energy thing and I wanted it. So 2 days later I did it again. Similar results. Again and again and again. Lots of I don’t feel like it days back then. It occurred to me that was something I had to turn around. If I ever say it or think it I run to the gym. Still do. Then, at about the three month mark something happened. After my workout I went outside and cut the grass. It was over 2 hours at that time. A push it lawnmower and an electric Weed-eater. Wow!, I was finally starting to see energy after my workout. 20mins was no longer a problem and my weights were no longer much of a challenge. It was time to move up to the next level.~J
